Last Knights is a 2015 actiondrama film directed by Kazuaki Kiriya and written by Michael Konyves and Dove Sussman, based on the legend of the forty-seven rōnin.[5][6] The film, a joint production between the UK, Czech Republic and South Korea, stars Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman in the lead roles. It centres on a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt minister.[7][8][9][10] The film had its limited release on 3 April 2015, by Lionsgate and was released to video on demand on 30 June 2015.[11] The film was dedicated to the memory of actor Dave Legeno, who died in 2014.

Plot[edit]

Bartok, an aging nobleman, watches over his estate—a vassal kingdom to a great empire. Protecting the Bartok clan is Commander Raiden and his elite soldiers, who also serve Bartok. Raiden is surprised when Bartok tells him he is to be his heir, and gives him a sword. The empire has become corrupt and the evil minister, Geza Mott, humiliates Bartok by beating him with a stick for failing to provide an adequate bribe, until Bartok retaliates—which is treason against the crown. Bartok is put to trial where he speaks openly of his disdain for what honour has become in the empire. He is sentenced to death and Raiden is ordered to execute his own master. Bartok's estate is divided and the Bartok clan is disbanded. Geza Mott suspects Raiden will demand vengeance, and has his trusted warrior, Ito, watch Raiden to ensure there is no possibility of revenge. Sonic cd full game free.

A year passes and Raiden is now a drunk. Geza is still highly fearful of Raiden's wrath and demands half his father-in-law Auguste's, troops to safeguard him while he completes construction of his newly fortified estate, with more soldiers than the emperor's own security detail. Geza is eventually promoted to First Council to the Emperor who chides Geza for his behavior and obsession with Raiden. Raiden's wife, Naomi, couldn't bear to be with him as he had fallen so low, with Raiden even selling his sword for more drink and is hated by his own men for killing Bartok. When Bartok's virgin daughter is offered to Raiden in a whorehouse, he shows no concern for her but leaves the premises. Geza finally lets his guard down and stops watching Raiden. It is now revealed that Raiden and the Bartok clan soldiers sacrificed everything for the illusion of a complete defeat, and have been waiting for the right time to group and together regain the clan's honour by avenging their master's death.

Raiden's men have been working in secret, building up contacts and connections, and gathering intelligence about Geza's estate—even secretly altering his estate to help them in their cause. As Raiden's men infiltrate the estate, Auguste, who is a trusted old friend of Bartok's, has secretly made a pact with Raiden to help him, in exchange for Raiden's help to free his daughter from her marriage to Geza Mott. Geza has always mistreated Auguste's daughter which, along with Bartok's execution, causes Auguste to see that his vicious son-in-law has no honour. As part of their plan, Auguste helps smuggle Raiden's youngest man, Gabriel, into the estate ahead of time. Raiden and his men successfully infiltrate Geza's estate, are discovered, and need to face a large number of soldiers.

Raiden's men fall one by one as they enter deep into Geza's estate. Ito takes responsibility for his complacency and duels with Raiden. Ito's sword fails and Raiden kills him. Ito's remaining men surrender out of respect for Raiden's victory. Raiden breaks into Geza's bedroom and decapitates him as Geza make a failed attack of his own. With Geza dead, Raiden's surviving group rescues Bartok's daughter and tells her that Bartok's honour is restored. When word reaches the Emperor, he discusses with his council on how to deal with Bartok's soldiers, who caution him against the risk of turning the people against the crown. They realise that the public view Geza's death as a righteous one, and widely support the Bartok clan. The council advises that any judgement should restore their honour, rather than make them martyrs. Raiden asks that he be the only one executed for Geza's death, an idea that Auguste relays on his behalf.

The crown publicly admits the righteousness of the Bartok clan, but also reminds the crowd that killing a high council member is still the same as an attack on the emperor and Raiden is next to be executed for his defiance. Before his execution, Raiden charges Lieutenant Cortez to take control of the surviving Bartok clan. Pc cillin internet security free download. In a flashback, he sees Naomi one last time to apologise for her suffering before making peace with his own life, Naomi having left him as a willing part of the plan. Raiden lowers his head with his eyes closed, and as the executioner draws his sword back, Raiden's eyes suddenly open wide and the screen goes to black so two ends are possible: Raiden lives or dies.

Pretty good medieval action drama flick
root993 April 2015
I am compelled to write my first review after 4 years on IMDb due to the bad reviews by critics. First off, I completely enjoyed this movie. I loved the initial setting which took about an hour which others complained to be too long but I felt that laid a good foundation for the plot to continue.
The second half could've been better but I'm not complaining. This was much better than Ridley Scott's Robin Hood when compared to a medieval story. What lacked in this movie was more character development and overall depth to both the story and characters. The details of storming the castle are also just gone through quickly without any importance. I feel like this could've been a 3 hour saga of excellent medieval story had the director gone with it. A fully developed story with multidimensional characters would've been perfect. Both Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman gave wonderful performances and as someone who loves their movies I felt satisfied just to see them in these particular roles.
Overall, don't miss this one just because of some harsh critic ratings. I felt entertained and this is one movie which did not let me down at all when compared with other medieval stories of the past few years.

A Movie Worth Watching
matt-208-232764 April 2015
I just watched this film and, honestly, I find the single review posted here to be wholly ludicrous - one star indeed.
There's a sizable group of talented actors and actresses in this film that give some very respectable performances. If fighting scenes are all you look for in a film like this then yes, it might feel boring to you. But for most others you'll find a well executed story that portrays honor in a time when honor was everything.
Production was accurate, continuity is good, and the story keeps you interested. It's not, by any means, a fresh story line - but there's a reason it's an old standard. Casting was well done, and Clive Owen, as always, does not disappoint. In fact, the entire cast did a commendable job and that can not be said for the majority of contemporary films.
So, to wrap up; if you're strictly an 'action' viewer, you may not enjoy this movie. But if you enjoy a good story that isn't entirely predictable, you might just enjoy this film.

Really good, and enjoyable, highly recommend it
zidangus27 September 2015
After reading the initial reviews of this movie I thought it might be a bit of a turkey. However, I like these type of movies so I thought I would give it 15-20 minutes and see how it goes. Happily, it went well, I was hooked on the storyline and the acting. Clive Owen was fantastic as he usually is in these type of roles, Morgan Freeman, again one of his better movies, and the supporting cast all very well acted. The CGI was good but plot and acting outshone it, which is a really good thing in my opinion. Anyway, I really do recommend this film to those people who like this genre. So please do not listen to the negative reviews to much, watch it for 15 minutes and then decide for yourself if it's for you.

nickscout15 June 2017
I watched this movie and it was very good movie.
It was well acted and scripted. I am entirely confused why this has a 6 star rating. The story line does not get so boring that i start looking at memes on my phone during the movie. This was a great movie i would recommend to friends. (if i had any)
Plus it has Morgan Freeman.

Last Knights does not get the respect it deservesLast knights part 2
philpenn-493746 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Last Knights is a unique and interesting remake of the classic 47 Ronin. Set in medieval England instead of Japan enables a retelling more attractive to westerners as it takes Japanese honor codes and draws the parallels with everything we love in an Arthurian legend. The story is packed with both action and thoughtful storytelling that holds interest throughout.
In my opinion, the poor reviews come from two places. First, people who want pure action are turned off by the lull in the middle where the endgame is prepared. They are simply bored waiting for the next sword fight and have no care for the story at all.
The second, less frequent, are those who appreciate the story but object to the graphic honesty of the martial scenes.
If you are ready for both, if you want to be inspired by not just physical prowess but devotion to something or someone greater than yourself, enjoy Last Knights as did I.

If you enjoy old Japanese samurai dramas, you might like this better than MetaCritic suggests
bonesupren18 November 2015
Usually my tastes align pretty much with the score than MetaCritic (and RottenTomatoes) gives for a particular movie. This is one of the few exceptions to that rule. I disclaimer: I am Japanese and live in Japan, and have a sweet tooth for old school Japanese dramas (not just the masters like Kurosawa and Juzo Itami) and styles that some people might not have the taste for. Note that in Japan this movie is getting good reviews -- but that's probably due to the Japanese director and the Japanese actors in it. However, there is a lot of Korean influence (according to the credits) in it as well.
If I was to pick anything wrong with the movie, the second act, which builds up the twist to the third act and the obvious final battle, was a little too obvious to me, and those familiar with this type of drama, even Clint Eastwood's old masterpiece, 'Unforgiven', will probably recognize the device right away.
The combat scenes were very well done and while choreographed, there was a minimal of 'you must suspend your disbelief' type Matrix-like line-and-wire acrobatics (there was some though).
Finally, the movie doesn't wimp out with a Hollywood style 'Happy Ending.' I'm not going to tell you if it's a good ending or not.. I'm just saying that they didn't choose the ending that would have marketers would have preferred. Good for them.

Owen, please do more roles like this !!!
Metallicage1 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Now how I ended up watching this movie in 2018 ? Well I have been searching on GOOGLE for movies that are similar to Gladiator or King Arthur or Braveheart so that I can quench my thirst after watching a movie with plent of well managed SWORD fights - a movie with knights in it, or with warriors who know how to raise a metal and how to swing a damn blade.
So, I found few titles and I picked up this movie for the cast was fairly impressive and I like Clive so much in such roles full of attitude! Honestly, I am a bit surprised with a low rating for this movie this movie is around a 6.8 at least. I rated it a 7 for few reasons that are mentioned below:
1. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the acting of almost every one who was given a role. From Morgan Freeman to that kid who died defending the iron gate. Of course, I would bed hollywood to cast Clive Owen more and more for such roles, as his looks are so damn perfect for all of it ! I even request GOT recruiting team to have him on for even only two episodes in the last season (if possible) and besides he has dashing british accent anyways!
2. The script was well written. I have to say the dialogues were nicely penned and were having least disappointing moments for the viewers. Hell yea I even found it a bit emotional sometimes during the movie.
3. Ending was very well balanced. For a movie like this one, it is not easy to first of begin it with an eye catching scene or scenes and then to finish it off in a way everyone feels satisfactory about. Till the last moment when clive opens his eyes, I felt pretty satiable about the entire movie. I strongly feels there should be another part of it.
4. Finally, the stage setting and locations were pretty decent. Soundtrack was not too bad either. I felt it was a combination from some of the Hans Zimmer, but only at few times.
Well, such movies are always soothing to watch and I dun know if it is me (as I am a mughal by cast :P) or many others think the same way. This film made me think several times that I should go act for Hollywood for one of my own scripts and I should better start writing one now to make it happen in my dreams after years :)

Like a really good whiskey diluted with half water.
mytelecaster674 April 2015
Good actors and they did deliver. Good camera work and OK action scenes. Director has done a good job with what he had to work with. Unfortunately the whole story was thin. If filmmakers can take a comic book issue and make a good movie based on the story, I wonder, was this script written on the inside of a matchbook? The story begins and ends but that's basically it. It's boring, slow and unimaginative. It does not hurt to watch the movie, it's a pretty beautiful illustration but it leaves no lasting aftertaste. Do not pass this movie if you like the genre but save it for a bad weather day. Feels awkward to say that I give this movie 4 because it was well made so I rather put it that this movie lost 6 stars because it was boring.

With distinct visual style Last Knights is a decent light fantasy flick, although the narrative might feel too familiar and slow
quincytheodore4 April 2015
It's odd that a medieval fantasy movie with respectable cast nearly flies off radar. Last Knights is not an epic tale, in fact the plot heavily resembles that of 47 Ronin and considering even Keanu Reeves' journey is inspired by multitude of per-existing works, this plot is unoriginal at best. The pacing is slow, creating a rather bloated runtime. Still, the cast as well as cinematography produce nice atmosphere, especially in latter half, just making Last Knights a moderately enjoyable popcorn flick.
Raiden (Clive Owen) is a commander with a dark past, he was taken by his lord Bartok (Morgan Freeman) and granted opportunity to lead the knights. As a man of integrity Bartok openly opposes Minister Gezza Mott (Aksel Hennie), this doesn't end up well for him as he loses his land and riches, amongst other things. Thus the tale of coping and possible vengeance begins. The premise is far too predictable, more so if you have watched 47 Ronin, the screenplay almost mirrors one another.
Clive Owen has the rugged commander look, but he doesn't seem engaging. I can't help but seeing the solemn Keanu Reeves' persona as neither of them barely exhibits any meaningful expression. Morgan Freeman is as dependable as ever, he's charismatic and does pretty much what one expected. As for the villain, Aksel Hennie performs admirably. He does seem corrupt, conniving and slightly paranoid. The script gives him ominous vibe that audience would love to hate.
Supporting cast is oriented towards the mix of European and Asian, props for the casting department to pull off the eclectic assemble. They also have some experience in action movies and TV shows overall, so it's not all obscure faces. The setting puts emphasis on hybrid culture, architectures and costumes appear to be from ancient Persia with an oriental touch. It's a quaint atmosphere and presents a few lavish set pieces. Cinematography uses grayish filter for most of these areas and outfits, in exception of certain characters or definitive environment which are more vibrant.
While it looks presentable, the plot may deter some audiences. Its script tries to engage with intriguing lines, and it's mildly successful. Unfortunately, the film spends more than half of its runtime stuttering to find its rhythm. This is made worse by the outdated screenplay, the plot devices are not only foreseeable, they are also heavy-handed in execution.
The last act fares better as it offers more polished action sequences, although there is no surprise twist to be had here. Last Knights is made from tired elements of the genres, it doesn't do enough for a fascinating spectacle. However, with a presentable graphic and production design, it's barely sufficient for a light watch.

This movie gets +2 because it did what 47 Ronin failed to do
dimbost7 June 2015
Yes, this movie is clearly based on the same material that was used to make 47 Ronin, Although no credit is given to the film, one could say it is a direct re-imagining of that story. But what this film does so well and so much more better then the 47 Ronin is that it really Drives the patience, Loyalty and the Sacrifice that Ōishi (the real Leader of the 47 Ronin) in this case Raiden played by Clive Owen had to sacrifice his marriage and become a full blown dunk, who lost respect of all of his peers. He patiently waited for the right moment to strike and avenge his master.
Now while 47 Ronin with Keanu was an average film which did a poor job of showing the patience and sacrifice but rather focused on mystical and spiritual effects. Last Knights does a great job to bring you into the drama and sadness that helpless knight has to endure while slowly waiting for his plan to come in to affect.
The acting is on high level, with Owen doing a great job. and the speech that Morgan gave was very important to today's world. The fight scenes were creative and interesting, the effects were useful and good.
Overall this film is quite decent, should probably be around 6.5-7 stars, but like i said i gave this film +2 for the way it properly portrayed the story that 47 Ronin failed to do.

The familiar samurai tale told in the exact same way, but with knights
estebangonzalez1015 April 2015
'The code was simple: Possess an absolute devotion to one's Master.' Last Knights is Japanese director, Kazuaki Kiriya's third feature film, but his first one with well known Hollywood actors. What he attempts to do here is blend the familiar story of the 47 Ronin and adapt it to the Medieval world of knights. Why would you want to trade samurai soldiers for knights? I have no idea because it actually doesn't work. You have these men living by a code of honor similar to the samurai, but there is nothing fresh or unique about the idea because the entire story becomes completely predictable and generic. During this feudal world, Captain Raiden (Clive Owen) is completely devoted to serving the house of Bartok (Morgan Freeman), his wealthy and caring Master. Second in command is another loyal knight, Lt. Cortez (Cliff Curtis). These knights live by a strong code of honor and respect for their Master, but when Bartok is dishonored by the Emperor's corrupt adviser, Gezza Mott (Aksel Hennie), the knights are dismantled. Will the knights be able to rise again and avenge their Master or will they fall into despair and go back to their old ways? If you've seen any samurai movie you probably know what to expect. The greatest issue I had with Last Knights is its lack of originality. We've seen the film played out many times before and that makes the pacing of the film feel incredibly tedious because we know what is going to happen next. Kiriya tries to take his time establishing the setting and building the characters, but since we've seen this world before it doesn't do anything for the audience. Clive Owen is a fine actor, but he's even played this role before in King Arthur, a knight who is completely devoted to the cause. Morgan Freeman is one of those actors who you could close your eyes just to hear him speak and that is basically why he's in this, to narrate the introduction of the film and set the premise. Last Knights can easily be divided into three acts, the first being the introduction of each character and the injustice they must face, the second which takes up most part of the film centers on the build-up of each character, and the third part of the film and by far the most exciting is the climax where vengeance is coming. The problem is that neither the introduction or the character development manage to engage the audience and everything is taken way too seriously for us to be entertained by it. The characters are completely one dimensional. Only Clive Owen gets to play a meaty role, but everyone else is simply playing a stereotypical character in a film like this. And even watching Owen on screen you can't help but feel the familiarity of having seen him play this role before. The villain is perhaps the best example of how stereotypical the characters in this film are. You couldn't have Aksel Hennie play a more evil or sadistic man than he is here: he beats his wife, abuses people, accepts bribes from other noble men, and to top things off he hurts animals. He's also a coward who surrounds himself with thousands of guards and a heavy fortified home. That is what actually makes the final climax scene quite entertaining. The action is delivered quite well and it makes up for some of the tedious pacing during the first 80 minutes of the film. Is it enough to recommend the film? Not even close.

Very Good. Almost Epic-like
bob-rutzel-239-5254305 September 2015
Raiden (Clive Owen) must find a way to avenge the death of Bartok (Morgan Freeman) his master who was sentenced to death for challenging the Emperor's (Peyman Moaadi) Minister, Gezze Mott (Aksel Hennie). The reasoning is that a challenge to the Minister is also a challenge to the Emperor and must be dealt with by death. Bartok did have the opportunity to kill Gezze Mott and regretted not doing so. The Emperor rules that Raiden must carry out Bartok's death sentence. Well, this wasn't in the cards. (it was in the script, however)
It was never clear to me what country is involved in this. Who has Emperors? Japan, China, France? Hmmm…… I suppose it really doesn't matter as this is not a true story. It does, however, have elements of another movie: 47 Ronin (a good movie BTW).
This has inklings of being an epic, the cinematography was outstanding; the acting: excellent; the music signaled it being so; the fights: bloody, brutal and intense; the scene setups were masterful. You almost believed this was a true story. Kudos. (you're too easy)
The key to this movie is in the words above ' Raiden must find a way to avenge the death of Bartok.' Keep that in mind and you almost know how this will play out.
I was impressed with the actor who played the Emperor: Peyman Moaadi, who gave a very strong performance even though his screen time wasn't all that much.
Some of the fighting near the end, while good, was always in the dark, blurry, too fast and hard to follow who were the good guys vs the bad guys. (the bad guys wore black helmets)
All in all a well told story with Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen carrying the load in good fashion. (7/10)
Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: No.

Tribute to the 47 Ronin
kisifolda13 June 2015
A great movie with all imaginable letters. A reference and a great tribute to the 47 Ronin, not that of Keanu Reeves thing, but the true 47 Ronin of Mizoguchi and Kunio Watanabe. Thanks to producers by these 2h unforgettable.
What movie show, incredibly moving and full of tension. An excellent script, flawless performances where Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman join a sensational group, putting on a show. A costume height, splendid photography and history too touching. I loved it. sure twisted by another end, picked me up by surprise, leaving me half perplexed, but what a wonderful film. Of course I recommend without doubt.

More than watchable
preben_hassel1 October 2015
The first thing you look at when you consider to watch a movie are usually the actors.
Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman and upcoming Norwegian actor Aksel Hennie(Known from 'The Martian', 'Hercules' and 'Headhunters') are some of the actors this movie can offer.
As for the story. It's not the deepest story, but in this movie I feel that it's not rally necessary. The movie is a typical knight movie with some factors of the Asian samurai (But it works) and is ended with an epic battle no man can dare say is boring not original.
I really liked it. 8/10

The right ingredients without execution and ruined with clichés
sajjadzaidi7 April 2015
A 'historic' piece about knights, castles, emperors and power struggles, starring the likes of Morgan Freeman, Clive Owen and Cliff Curtis. Sounds pretty amazing. Except, it is a confusing mess of the most overused clichés.
Clichéd and wooden dialog, predictable storyline and overused effects. Everything is shown as pure good or pure evil. Complete waste of Freeman's talents. Little to no character development.
I get that it's a fictional place and time, but the main aim of the whole movie appears to be political correctness rather than telling a good story. Randomly putting people of different races in different roles, then randomly assigning them costumes and weaponry from different cultures is not political correctness.
Had to keep watching because of a friend who despite the obvious, couldn't guess how it would end. Would highly advise skipping this one.

'Last Knights' is a story about.. well, I kind of had to work out the premise as I went along. It's safe to say that it's set in a 'fictional' world of make believe. It's based on an old Japanese Tale and then imported to a sort of Western culture, only during medieval times, hence the use of 'knights' over 'samurais.' If you've seen the marketing then you can't fail to miss Morgan Freeman's face on the front cover. He's basically sharing top-billing with Clive Owen, only he's not really in it for the film's full duration, leaving any die-hard fans possibly feeling a little short-changed. The story focuses on Clive Owen, as the leader of a band of knights and their attempts to right the wrongs done to them and their people.
And that's about it. I sat through the whole film, watch Mr Owen and co generally chopping up all those who opposed to them and was left pretty neutral. There's not much wrong with the film, i.e. Freeman and Owen both turn in reasonable performances, but then there's nothing I can really say that's particularly positive about it either. Yup, there's action. The sets are decent and reminiscent of the time period. And it's a tale about good triumphing over evil.
The problem is that I've seen all that before. There's just nothing here that's original enough to really elevate it. I'm now struggling to find anything left to write. It's that mediocre. Not bad. Not good. You could check your emails or make a cup of tea at any time during the story and wouldn't miss a thing. Rent or watch for free before you buy.

A western approach on 47 Ronin
siderite25 September 2016
In an unnamed empire, a lord is being killed for political reasons and the greed of a competitor, his private army disbanded, his lands divided among the other nobles. A year later, his retainers, all loyal followers of the code of the warrior, take revenge.
This is actually a real and very famous and influential event that happened in Japan in the 18th century, also known as the Ako incident. I found it funny that the ending of the movie was changed to suit Western sensibilities, but the gist of the film is the same nonetheless.
The acting was good, with a real nice cast, the directing was good and the entire feel of the movie, from cinematography to costumes, helped get me in the atmosphere of the story. I felt the music was a bit too bombastic for the scenes, but it was also nice.
Bottom line: a UK and South Korea coproduction, it feels different than an American movie, and in a very good way, but it is not an exceptional film. Perhaps its greatest merit is the acting and the rather faithful depiction of the incident. The ending ruins that a bit, but not by much.

Good Beginning and End..Shame about the bit in between
s32761696 April 2015
Last Knight taps into the fantasy sword and sandals genre. Its set in a fictional empire with a medieval style hierarchy of Emperors, nobles and knights.
The film has a samurai flavour too, with notions of honour and sacrifice for ones liege lord. The sets are excellent and the acting is fair. Where this film fails miserably is in the story telling department.
The enjoyable portions of this film take place in the first and last twenty or so minutes. What happens in between, can only be described as long winded and excruciatingly dull.
As a consequence, whilst I liked aspects of this film, I can in no way recommend it. Four out of ten from me.

Yet another rendition freely based on 47 Ronin , it deals with a feudal lord : Morgan Freeman and his soldiers captained by Clive Owen .
ma-cortes10 June 2018
Although not mentioned , the story results to be a remake of the the 47 Ronin and and it boasts a splendid cast . it is based on the Japanese folk legend . Middle Age , an Europen country , this is an epic chronicling an ancient legend .As a group of military led by Clive Owen set out to avenge the dishonor and death of their master at the hands of a ruthless , corrupt Prime Minister, Aksel Hennie . Commanded by a fallen knight who was tricked into commiting an ominous execution , he is called Raiden ,and along with their knights rise against a nasty , sadistic ruler to avenge their Master , as every battle needs a hero . They are banished and isolated but Raiden rallies again his bunch and reforces the team . As their entire destiny lies in the hands of one knight .His threatened people made him a leader , the empire made him a renegade , history made him a hero .
Features noisy action , strong rivalry , thrills , emotion , intense drama and a lot of sword-play . It is made big scale with some breathtaking and spectacular battles such as the final assault on the impregnable fortress . The plot is ordinary and simple , as a rough emperor : Payman Maadi sentences a powerful feudal lord who is condemned to death and then his soldiers become Ronin : warriors with no master , and planning a scheme to revenge their dishonored Master , subsequently seeking vengeance , justice and honor. The appropriate photography is generously laden with views of of palaces and castles as well as paronamic vistas .The action is well paced with adequate interpretation, though the story occassionaly drags for an uneven script by Dove Sussman . It is full of good values as bravery, knighthood, honour , comradeship , sacrifice and redemption . Cast and support cast is frankly fine , such as Owen , Freeman , Aksel Hennie , Ayelet Zurer as faithfull wife , Ihara as an upright knight and Cliff Curtis as btave lieutenant .
Ii contains a colorful and evocative photography shot in Czech Republic , though sometimes dark cinematography by the great Spanish cameraman Antonio Riestra who has photographed nice films as Mama , The bachelors , Katmandu , Lidice , Black bread, Stephanie , Eloise ,and The face of love . Rousing and thrilling musical score accompanying perfectly to action from Ramgotra and Martin Tillman. The motion picture turns out to be a British/South Korea coproduction well directed by Kazuaki Kiriya who has made a few movies as Goeman and Cassehern
This is the seventh cinematic adaptation of the 47 Ronin incident after 47 Ronin 1942by Kengi Migozuchi this is the largest version of the kabuki rendition of the story by Seika Mayama ; The loyal 47 Ronin 58 , Chushingura 62 , Ako jo danzetsu , 47 Ronin 84 , Saigo no Chushingira 2010 and the most popular retelling is 47 Ronin 2013 by Carl Rinsch with Keanu Reeves , Hiroyuki Sanada , Tanaka , Rinko Kikuchi , Cary Tagawa. And is really influenced in the Film ' Ronin' 1998 by John Frankenheimer with Robert DeNiro , Sean Bean, Stellan Skarsgard , Jonathan Pryce .

A good fantasy hack and slash lacking a bit in the hack and slash..
kanati-222 August 2015
This movie had a bit too much buildup and not enough action for the first two thirds of the movie. And yet I was still drawn in and it held my attention. So when the action did come it was fast and tense. I think the 'professional' reviewers have given this movie far too bad a rap. It isn't going to win it's actors any academy awards but for what it is, it does more than passingly well and a lot better than most that have come before it. Even though this movie is based on the Japanese legend of the 47 ronin and transplanted into a pseudo medieval European style fantasy film, it still manages to make the story feel somewhat fresh and the inevitable ending makes you wonder if it's the one expected or not. For me, when a movie makes me wish there was just five more minutes, then it has accomplished something and gets bonus points. This one did so.

Wathchable but lacking creativity

Warning: Spoilers
First, I have to say that I did enjoy watching it. Perhaps it was seeing (spoiler alert!!!) the 2013 47 Ronin just the other day that gave the story a bit of a stale taste to it, though. It is pretty plain to see that the story follows the same historical template. The movie seems nicely directed and all the characters are well balanced. Peyman Moaadi really played the role of the emperor well but also Aksel Hennie did shine as the villain Gezza Mott. Especially the latter role might have easily been overplayed. The effects, props and makeup are well done, which is another point where such a straight forward movies, following a well-known story, may easily could have failed. We have good action and a solid story untainted by trashiness but also without any real surprise. There is the hero, Owen as Raiden, who (spoiler!!!) seems to become a drinker, which is however a scheme that is revealed only towards the last part of the movie. While it is nicely done, it is likely not come as a surprise.

what the hell did i just saw?
davish_wulf-111 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Far away, in the land of Fog, there is no color to be found, except a pinkish red here and there and lots of gold tones in the Palace of a wuss landlord, that looks like a Chinese guy, with the face of a Swedish with a wig. In this far away land, people have no past or bother to tell it anyway, except for a drunkard of a leader, who commands a bunch of swordsmen mercenaries, with a honor code. Now this swordsmen must have found the secret of the ultimate sword, because the swords both seem Oriental and Occidental at the same time and have no hand-guards.. who needs them? Milleniums of evolution in sword-making must have resulted in this ultimate weapon, a sword without a hand-guard..
Now to put a story in one page, wuss landlord manages to get the drunkard's master killed, ordered by a Hindu looking puppet Emperor. Drunkard goes away in shame, pretends to drink his life away but in the end gets his revenge, together with his nameless, multi-raced warriors. Oh they have a name, I just don't think i cared, or listened. Characters in Fog land are bland, without history or soul, just like pictures in a book, a black and white book where every race comes around, Oriental, Occidental, you name it.. i wonder what the cultural roots are in this land, did they all come from a multi-race Pandora box?
In the end, I could care less if the drunkard died, if the wuss was going to have another panic attack, if there was honor or not involved.. the movie lacks spirit, soul, charisma & interest.
It seems in Fog land, after climbing a wall, you can immediately attack from the sky, make impossible moves during fights and brandish weapons like toothpicks.
Clive seems to have fallen from Arthur, but alas, his acting skills together with Freeman's usual charisma can't hold a candle to a lousy script, terrible character development and movie pace.
Fantasy or reality, Oriental or Occidental, even the swords don't seem right.. movie tries to do everything and accomplishes anything but sheer boredom.
2 Stars for Freeman +1 for the achievement of getting this fine actor in such a lousy picture.
Next.. in color please

Get Samuel L Jackson Now
Theo Robertson7 April 2015
A film starring Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman ? Hardly striking casting but Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman starring in ye olde merry days of Europe . Ah I've got it now Owen will be playing a medieval king and Freeman will be playing a character picked up from his travels , you can still have non-white characters in a movie set in Europe five hundred years ago . Oh hold on Morgan Freeman plays the king ! Add to this Indian and Asiatic cast members and you've got something that doesn't really work
I'm going to have to be very careful what I say here in case I'm picked up wrong but If you're casting a medieval movie and you've employed the united colours of Benneton there should be a good reason for this . In fact it's the perfect opportunity to make a screwball post modernist satire similar to BLAZING SADDLES with swords and one wonders how much fun Quinten Tarantino would have had with LAST KNIGHTS ? Here however there's not the slightest hint of self awareness , post modernism , irony or anything else hinting that the film is laughing at itself or its audience or its genre
This is the major failing of LAST KNIGHTS and I don't think I've seen such a serious , po -faced film for a long time , Each and every single scene is treated with absolute reverent seriousness , so much so you fear that anyone rustling sweet papers or coughing in the cinema will instantly be put to death . Someone somewhere behind the scenes seems to be under the impression the more serious a film is it equates to it being a better film . This is certainly not the case here otherwise it'd a serious contender for best picture at next years Oscars . I do concede it has more chance than FIFTY SHDES OF GREY of winning awards that's hardly an earth shattering prediction
Ignoring the suggestion that medieval Europe was a melting pot there is an annoying irritant that is far harder to ignore and that is everyone tends to speak in a different sounding accent . Some characters have oriental accents , some English accents , some American accents and some characters have generic European accents and when they're all speaking heavy sombre Shakespearian type dialogue it's hugely annoying and distracting . If you're doing a film like this at least have an exclusive classically trained Brit cast all speaking in the same accent or do the absolute opposite and have Samuel L Jackson ride in to town to chop off some mother effing heads with a mother effing sword . Now that would be a great film
Oh BTW can the people who worked on the film please stop registering with the site so they can write a glowing review saying LAST KNIGHTS deserved 10/10 . Thanks in advance

I wanted to like this
jamesearpstudio4 April 2015
I really wanted to like this, it ticks the boxes (plot wise) of what I like. However, it is truly terrible without any redeeming features. It's like a bunch of vacant morons from Sloane Square just said 'Yah, we should totally make a game of thrones style film'. The acting is beyond bad. The direction and editing is just awful.
I'm partial to a 'mediocre, bit of fun' film but this is not that. I always want to like Clive Owen, he has a face that could be great for film but there is just no substance to his acting. Ever.
Even Morgan Freeman struggles in this. I truly believe that the look of contempt on his face in the film is for what he's taking part in. He's not acting, he's thinking of firing his agent.
Just lost for words. Just truly, truly terrible, shallow, hollow, vacant and...
